The United Way of Madison County’s prestigious Tocqueville Society was named in honor of Alexis Charles-Henri Clerel de Tocqueville, who travelled throughout the United States as a young man observing American Society. Tocqueville admired America’s spirit of voluntary association and voluntary effort for the common good, observing that Americans helped each other in times of need.
Members of the Tocqueville Society contribute $10,000 or more annually to United Way and serve as leadership givers to encourage other to also give to United Way, helping their communities and neighbors. The society’s objectives include:

Save and change lives throughout the nation through philanthropic leadership |

Enhance local recognition of long-standing service volunteers in ways that foster voluntary community service |

Expand high-level personal giving and major giving programs with high standards |
| • |
Build local/national linkages to enhance and strengthen local leadership development and major giving efforts |
