Sonya’s Story

Sonya came to LIFT Housing after an eviction when the house she rented went into foreclosure. As a single parent, Sonya balances raising her nine-year old daughter while pursuing a bachelor’s in Special Education and working part-time. Despite these demands, Sonya maintains a 3.6 GPA, winning two academic grant awards this year, which LIFT encouraged her to apply for. She chose her field because in grammar school a special education teacher helped her overcome a speech impediment, shifting Sonya’s experience with education from dread to passion. As a LIFT client, Sonya has navigated setbacks such as an irreparable car – never missing a day of work or school during the crisis. Supportive housing is helping Sonya stay on track to graduate in 2009.

Dear Friends,

I have five children that have been going to the HEALS Dental Clinic ever since it opened. A lot of people are afraid of going to the dentist, but my kids just love it. Everyone there is very kind and always tells you what they’re going to do. The kids get a new tooth brush and something from the treasure box.

Probably the best part for me is that it’s so close to the school. I don’t have to take off work or worry about getting them to their appointment if my car isn’t working.

Thank you, HEALS.
